Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a continuing education program for blood bank professionals. The main research question was 'how could be organized an adequate and qualified continuing education program for blood bank professionals?'
For this study, the secondary analysis of previous interview data operated in 2000, as well as literature review, was performed. Moerover, this model was derived from several brain storming processes with experts.
The results of this study were as follows :
1. The program model
1) The program is divided into 3 different courses such as nurses' courses, laboratory technicians' courses, and administrators' courses.
2) The Education consists of 75 hours(5 credits) of each course.
3) Education method is planned on the basis of blended e-learning concept; web-based distance learning, field practices, and laboratory practices.
4) The lecturers would be consisted of field experts in Red Cross Blood Bank, faculty members of Red Cross College of nursing and other experts group of hematologist or health professionals.
2. The Curriculum
1) The subject, Introduction to Hematology that was 30-hour-course, was planned as a required subject for all 3 courses.
2) The subject, Specialized care for Blood Transfusion and Quality Control that was 45-hour-course, was planned for Nurses' Courses.
3) The subject, Clinical Hematology and Lab. Technology that was 45-hour-course, was planned for Laboratory Technicians' Courses.
4) The subject, An Administrative Theory and Practices of Blood management that was 45-hour-course, was planned for Administrators' Courses.
3. Other results
The contents of education, course descriptions, expected outcomes were also described in this study.
In conclusion, this continuing education program will be helpful for blood bank professionals to improve their clinical practice, as well as to take a lecture anytime or anywhere with e-learning.
